What does a web agency do?
Web agency, website agency and web design agency are often used for the same thing: a company that designs and builds websites, usually with related services around it.
Web, website or web design agency
A web design agency puts the emphasis on design: how your website looks and how visitors move through it. A web agency or website agency often handles the technical side too, such as integrations, online shops and custom features. In practice most agencies do both. So judge an agency by the websites it has delivered.
What a web agency does
A web agency starts by working out what your website needs to do and which pages that takes. Design, copy and development follow. At launch the agency connects the site to your domain and arranges hosting. Many agencies then offer maintenance, a system to manage your own content and a technical foundation so search engines can read your pages properly.
Advertising and marketing
An advertising agency works on your brand and campaigns, online and offline. A digital marketing agency focuses on ads, search engines and social media. They can arrange a website for you, but often outsource the build to a web agency. If what you need is a new or better website, a web agency puts you closest to the people who make it.
Freelancer or agency
A freelance web designer can do excellent work, often on smaller projects. Ask who takes over during illness or holidays, and whether the freelancer handles both design and development. An agency has more people and skills under one roof. Which fits best depends on the size of your website and how much you want to manage yourself.
